Quick setup

This quick setup guide will walk you through five of the most important settings in AffiliateWP.

  1. Referral type and rate
  2. Shipping and tax settings
  3. Cookie expiration
  4. Currency settings
  5. And enabling integrations

In your WordPress admin, go to Affiliates on the left side menu, and click on Settings. We’ll be working in the General tab.

1

Referral rate type and referral rate

Your referral rate can be a percentage or a flat rate. What you choose depends on your preference and your business model.

A percentage referral rate is based on a percentage of the total purchase price, whereas a flat referral rate is an exact amount, such as $10 for every referral, for example.

To set your referral rate type and referral rate, follow these simple steps:

1 - In the General settings, scroll down until you see Referral Rate Type

2 - Select Percentage or Flat Rate

3 - If you selected Flat Rate, enter the amount in the empty field next to Referral Rate. If you selected Percentage, enter a whole number – for example, the number ‘20’ for 20 percent.

AffiliateWP also allows you to further customize referral rates on a per-affiliate, per-product, tiered, lifetime, or recurring basis. Click here more detailed information on referral rates.

2

Configure shipping and tax settings.

Shipping and tax are considered “hard” or “net” costs. These are costs on top of a customer’s purchase that you can choose to pass on to your customers. You may like to exclude these from your referral rate calculations.

For example, if you sell physical products, you are likely charging shipping fees. If you want these costs excluded from your referral rate calculations, simply check the Exclude Shipping box to enable this setting.

Depending on your business, your integration, and your location, you may also be charging applicable taxes. Similar to shipping costs, you can choose to exclude these costs from your referral calculations. Enable this setting by checking the Exclude Tax box.

3

Set cookie expiration

AffiliateWP tracks affiliates using cookies, which are small pieces of data that are stored in the visitor’s browser when they visit your website.

If a customer visits your site without purchasing anything, but returns to your site later to purchase a product using the same browser, the referring affiliate can still be awarded that referral.

You can make your cookie expiration as long or as short as you want, however, we recommend at least 30 days. Other common time periods are 60 days or 90 days. This means the affiliate has more of a chance to earn a referral if the visitor returns in that time period. To specify the number of days the referral cookie should be valid for, enter the number of your choice in the empty field next to Cookie Expiration.

4

Set Currency Settings

The currency settings affect what currency your affiliates will see in their Affiliate Area.

Once installed and activated, AffiliateWP defaults to US Dollars, but you can choose the currency that you want to show your affiliates here where it says Currency.

You can also customize the symbol location, thousands, and Decimal Separator settings here.

5

Enable any integrations you may be using

AffiliateWP integrates with numerous popular 3rd-party WordPress plugins for eCommerce, memberships, subscriptions, form-builders, and more.

It’s easy to enable your integration. Just navigate to:

Affiliates → then Settings → and choose the Integrations tab. Then, check the box or boxes next to the integrations you will be using with AffiliateWP.

For example, if you are using WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads, simply check the box next to that integration. Remember: You only need to enable the integrations that you are using.
